This might involve studying pollutants in a given environment, or the movement of ions across a cell membrane, in order to better understand certain physiological processes such as nerve transmission or muscle contraction. She introduced us to lots of activities to show us that math could also be fun, particularly through links with nature or architecture, for example via the golden ratio.<sup data-fn=\"54054a5f-69be-4653-a0b8-8f564e2a5b1a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#54054a5f-69be-4653-a0b8-8f564e2a5b1a\" id=\"54054a5f-69be-4653-a0b8-8f564e2a5b1a-link\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After high school, I went to study at the University of Pavia in Italy.&nbsp; I found the first few weeks challenging, but through perseverance and discussions with my fellow students, I eventually enrolled in a Master\u2019s program in mathematics. I then went on to do a PhD, which was a formative experience, both personally and professionally. It also gave me the opportunity to travel, including a period in Vienna, before continuing my academic journey to Paris, where I am currently a postdoctoral researcher at CERMICS.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Surprisingly, what initially inspired me is closely related to what I do today. I use mathematics to better understand nature and the world around us. I am also involved in science outreach activities, aiming \u2013 like my teacher before me \u2013 to foster an interest in mathematics and present it in an engaging way. Last year, for example, I was invited to a middle school to mark Pi Day. I also took part in an illustrated conference during the Science Festival, where I presented my research to a general audience. First comes Ren\u00e9 Descartes for the philosophical questions he raises. When I was in high school, I began to question the nature of reality. Reading<em> Sophie\u2019s World<\/em> by Jostein Gaarder, a book recommended by my philosophy teacher, led me to reflect on my relationship with reality. Plato and Pythagoras also come to mind, particularly in relation to irrational numbers and, more broadly, the figure of the philosopher-mathematician.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, I am mainly inspired by the people I work with. During my PhD, I rediscovered the importance of teamwork thanks to Cl\u00e9ment Canc\u00e8s, Senior Researcher at Inria, who helped me a great deal by building my self-confidence. In my current team, I am greatly inspired by my colleagues, and especially by Virginie Ehrlacher, for her human qualities as well as her scientific excellence. She encourages us to put forward new ideas, even if they are not fully developed. All these encounters have shaped my vision of mathematics.&nbsp; To me, it is not a matter of genius, but above all of passion and determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e6f88f47c30d520fa7dc2b2b5d4a64c2\"><strong>Why is a conference like this important for young researchers in mathematics?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although some topics were beyond my area of expertise, I found the experience highly enriching. As a member of the organizing committee, I was particularly pleased with how the event went. I had previously participated in a similar conference in Italy, where I had been invited to present my work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Comparing the two experiences, I find that the Congress of Young Researchers in Applied Mathematics places greater emphasis on exchanges between young researchers, while offering a wider variety of content. The plenary sessions feature experienced leading speakers and addressed more general topics that were accessible to all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conference is also an opportunity to talk to people facing challenges similar to our own. This helps you to put things into perspective, build relationships and gain confidence in asking questions. At the start of my PhD, I was very hesitant to speak up, but gradually, thanks to these exchanges, I gained confidence. Looking back, I have realized that asking questions is essential for learning and making scientific progress.
