Such cities must combine the various needs of urban populations and the development of an &#8220;efficient transportation system&#8221;, since the traditional transportation system is neither sufficient nor suited to current needs. They are largely based on the use of new technologies, new buses, building smarter infrastructure and leveraging the momentum of the informal sector.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Greater Abidjan area has committed to an extensive investment and infrastructure modernization program. One of the top priorities is to rebalance the supply and demand in the high-capacity transportation sector: provide service for more users, over a longer distance, without increasing travel time or cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Peri-urban links to the city centre are one important area for development. In Africa, new projects are emerging, benefitting from support from international organizations (Ouagadougou, Conakry, Douala). Urban planning practices can benefit from this opportunity to be updated. Redeveloped public transport corridors can be strong drivers for a thoughtful approach to urban renewal, which is often lacking, and for investing in the area of non-motorized mobility.
