In just a century of exponential industrial innovation, production, and consumption, the unique properties of plastics have been exploited for an increasingly wide range of applications and have profoundly transformed our lifestyles. However, they also release an astronomical quantity of synthetic molecules into the planetary ecosystem and this generalized pollution, now evident to all, has caused growing concern in civil societies since the turn of the millennium.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
