Like physicians who take the Hippocratic oath, PhD recipients are now required to take the doctoral oath<\/a> of scientific integrity after their PhD defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“In the presences of my peers.
“With the completion of my doctorate in [xxx], in my quest for knowledge, I have carried out demanding research, demonstrated intellectual rigor, ethical reflection, and respect for the principles of research integrity. As I pursue my professional career, whatever my chosen field, I pledge, to the best of  my ability, to continue to maintain integrity in my relationship to knowledge, my methods, and my results.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This legal provision has been in effect since 1 January 2023. It was introduced by the Decree of 26 August 2022<\/a> on the awarding of the national doctoral degree (Article 16 of this decree).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Naturally, the comparison with the Hippocratic oath only goes so far. While physicians  belong to a professional body in a legal sense, this is not the case for researchers. But the ethical commitment involved in taking the oath, coupled with the fact that it is required by law, is intended to strengthen adherence to the principles of scientific integrity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This French provision does not have an equivalent in other countries. It has been widely lauded by various foreign organizations. A July 2022 article in Science<\/em><\/a> featured the positive responses of several international researchers who pointed to its strong symbolic value and hoped to see other countries follow France’s lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initial reactions in France have been very positive, as evidenced by the meeting held on 13 December 2022 by the French Acad\u00e9mie des Sciences, the French National Network of Doctoral Colleges (RNCD) and the French Office for Research Integrity (OFIS), during which five recent PhD recipients chose to take the oath<\/a>, even before the law had come into effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, several entities have contested the need for \u2013 or appropriateness of \u2013 requiring new PhD graduates to take an oath. On 3 February 2023, the 22nd<\/sup> chapter of the CNU (“History and Civilizations”) unanimously passed a motion against the doctoral oath. This motion<\/a> describes “\u2026 serious threats \u2026 [it] poses \u2026 not only to academic freedom, but to the doctoral degree itself, by introducing the principle of moral control over education and research.”<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, we should be optimistic with the already favorable reception of the PhD students and supervisors, as reported in an article on the oath in The Conversation<\/a>, “over 9,300 PhD students and 5,500 supervisors, from all disciplines,” <\/em>responded to a survey recently conducted by the RNCD on support for the doctoral oath. The findings are conclusive: “Just over 73% of PhD students and 67% of supervisors who responded to the survey have a favorable or very favorable opinion of it.” <\/em>    <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
