This means shells enable the minimal use of material. Their utility has been known since antiquity but reinforced concrete, “this liquid stone”, caused an architectural revolution by freeing builders of the need to master the art of stone-cutting (stereotomy) and enabling the structure, thanks to reinforcements included in the concrete, to withstand tractive forces.

If Félix Candela, a Mexican architect born in Spain (1910-1997) is now world-renowned, it is for the concrete shells that he designed and built in booming 1950s Mexico. His equally economical, effective and elegant building work is a fine example of Structural Art, the poetic expression defined by engineer David Billington to refer to the full extent of creativity that can be involved in structural design. To better understand why, this article looks back at the scientific and technical personalities who inspired Félix Candela (particularly Fernand Aimond (1902-1984) and Bernard Laffaille (1900-1955), and what sets him apart from his contemporaries: René Sarger (1917-1988) and Nicolas Esquillan (1902-1989).

Torroja, Dischinger and Freyssinet: forever first

The first reinforced concrete shells were works of corporate project engineers who developed technical know-how as well as theoretical tools to understand them. The particularity of these surfaces is that they can be traced by moving a straight line along two curves. This remarkable geometric property is an advantage both to calculate forces in the surface and also in terms of construction in order to build wooden formwork for concrete, as boards can be aligned directly according to the straight lines of the surface.

Of the ruled surfaces, some like hyperbolic paraboloids (HP) and revolving hyperboloids have a particular characteristic: they feature two families of independent straight lines. They were particularly useful, firstly for design engineers who could develop an exact analytical solution for stresses in the shell when computers were still not very powerful and, secondly, for building engineers who could use the first family of straight lines for the structure and the second to set up the formwork.

The utility of hyperbolic paraboloids for construction and the first analytical models were developed at the same time by Fernand Aimond and Bernard Laffaille in the mid-1930s, with the first prototypes in 1932 and large-scale hangars over the following years. has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-a5d66c1ff722d369031d3b397d85fcf1">Engineering art and performance

Félix Candela, like his predecessors, worked at a family-run construction firm Cubiertas ala, which enabled him to experiment and develop technical knowledge for formwork setup, reuse, and decentering (i.e., the process of removing centering from a vault or arch, which is the most sensitive stage of shell construction). Like them, he took an interest in scientific literature and read treatises by French engineers at the library of the National Autonomous University of Mexico where he lectured. Offended by the excessive mathematization of shell theory, which did not enable its practical application, he developed and published his own methods. Deemed simpler, they were made for designers so that they could put together complex and elegant structures based on simple shapes that they mastered from all points of view: geometrically, mechanically and constructively.

It was this mastery that enabled him to express the extreme thinness of his shells, whose rims appear free of any edge beams. His architectural training, his artistic sensibility, and the richness of his collaborations with local architects then enabled his works to extend beyond the purely technical scope and very quickly gain an international reputation.

Over the same period in France, others works were designed by René Sarger, an architectural engineer and former student of Bernard Laffaille, who took an interest in the constructional properties of hyperbolic paraboloids. Like Félix Candela, he relied at the start on the straight lines that form HPs and provide ideal directions for formwork, but, little by little, he switched to parabolas produced via a vertical section of HPs that provide ideal directions for a prestressed cable network. The advantage of networks like this is their uniquely tensioned structure, stabilized by the shape. It was still the aim of economizing material and mastering shape that guided design but, this time, the technology adopted (steel cables) enabled the limiting to the minimum of not only the weight of the roof but also provisional structures like centering.

Finally, Nicolas Esquillan, the engineer behind the Paris La Défense district’s CNIT (Centre des Nouvelles Industries et Technologies, Center of New Industries and Technologies) (1958) and Grenoble’s Palais des Sports (1967) explored other shapes than hyperbolic paraboloids but still adopted the same approach combining mastery of geometry and evaluation of forces and construction processes. Just like his contemporaries, he conducted physical experiments at a construction firm (in his case, Boussiron).

Creation of the International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures

All the engineers and architects mentioned so far were members of the IASS (International Association for Shell and Spatial Structures), founded in 1959 by Eduardo Torroja, to share practices and visions at its annual symposium. This association still exists and continues to bring together researchers, lecturers, designers and builders. Over 70 years, construction techniques and geometric knowledge have developed considerably. There has been a shift from studying the constructional properties of surfaces formed from straight lines (like the hyperbolic paraboloid) to surfaces made up of an assembly of circles, which are currently studied in discrete differential geometry. Likewise, there has been a shift from construction methods based on intensive use of labor carrying and troweling buckets of concrete to high-tech digital fabrication techniques such as 3D concrete printing. However, the pioneering spirit remains, i.e., the idea that good design, which is equally economical, effective and elegant, involves a mastery of geometry that alone enables an understanding of the channeling of forces in the structure and construction process.

Marrey, B.
