The impacts are related to a common functional unit for all the products being compared. This unit must be precisely defined and aligned with the goals and scope of the assessment. It is important to emphasize that LCA is designed to compare multiple alternative scenarios from an environmental perspective.

For example, the functional unit to compare different modes of transport (such as cycling, driving, taking the bus, or the tram) could be defined as ‘transporting one person over a given distance’.

The different phases of LCA

To evaluate the overall environmental impact of a product or service using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), it is essential to follow a structured, iterative process, which is divided into four key phases:

Phase 1: Objectives and Scope

The objectives of the study must clearly specify the following elements (in accordance with the standard ISO 14044):

the reasons for conducting the study,

the intended application of the study results,

the target audience for communicating the results,

the chosen format for this communication, particularly if the results will be used for comparative purposes.

The functional unit mentioned earlier is also established during this first phase of the LCA. It serves as the reference point throughout the analysis.

Phase 2: Life Cycle Inventory (LCI)

The second phase of the LCA involves calculating the life cycle inventory, i.e., compiling an inventory of all elementary input and output flows related to the product system under analysis. The output of this phase is an account of extracted resources and emitted substances. This phase is very time-consuming, but it is also critical, as the results are heavily dependent on the quality of the data used. Inventory calculations rely on databases, such as ecoinvent..

Phase 3: Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA)

At the end of the previous phase, a quantification of the input and output flows for the product system is available. The resulting inventory often contains several hundred flows, which are difficult to interpret as raw data. The impact assessment phase consists of turning these numerous flows into meaningful environmental impact categories, using a certain number of environmental indicators. To do this, LCIA relies on existing characterization methods, such as CML, ReCiPe, and IMPACT World+.

Phase 4: Interpretation of results

The interpretation phase involves analyzing the results from both the inventory and impact assessment phases in the context of the study’s original goals and scope. The objective is to draw meaningful conclusions and, where applicable, offer recommendations. Interpretation requires a critical evaluation of the results, including an assessment of their quality and robustness. Sensitivity analyses are therefore recommended to assess the influence of methodological choices, parameters, and other variables on the results. Interpretation is an iterative process, often involving revisiting the various characteristics of the study (goals, data, methods, etc.).

Read Episode 1: Life Cycle Assessment – History

Read Episode 3: Case Study

ISO 2006a.
