With this in mind<sup data-fn=\"73e20d49-49a9-4451-83c0-dd72a79c9c99\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#73e20d49-49a9-4451-83c0-dd72a79c9c99\" id=\"73e20d49-49a9-4451-83c0-dd72a79c9c99-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>, last April, several higher education institutions and research centers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.insis.cnrs.fr\/fr\/cnrsinfo\/lancement-dutopii-une-nouvelle-unite-pour-repenser-limpact-environnemental-de-la-recherche\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> launched the research support unit, UTOPII \u2013 Transdisciplinary Unit for the Orientation and Forecasting of Engineering Research\u2019s Environmental Impact. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-10ab31ea30e8f1b9072767b0e86f17d4\">Reducing the environmental impacts of research<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded in January 2025, UTOPII aims to assess the environmental impacts associated with French research, particularly in the fields of engineering and emerging technologies, through the use of prospective Life Cycle Assessment (pLCA), <a href=\"https:\/\/ingenius.ecoledesponts.fr\/articles\/analyse-du-cycle-de-vie-historique-methodologie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a method that links technical systems to the quantified environmental damage they may cause<\/a> &#8211; and, more broadly, to contribute to ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental footprint of research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UTOPII project lies at the intersection of existing initiatives aimed at reducing the environmental impacts of scientific activities and at developing and implementing eco-design approaches. Among these initiatives, UTOPII builds on the work carried out by the Labos1point5 research group, which focuses on laboratories, by targeting research projects and assessing the anticipated effects of their expected results, using a foresight approach. It also contributes to the long-standing efforts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosd.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EcoSD network<\/a><sup data-fn=\"e9d8ea70-9f22-4956-b9f6-e989f678979d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e9d8ea70-9f22-4956-b9f6-e989f678979d\" id=\"e9d8ea70-9f22-4956-b9f6-e989f678979d-link\">2<\/a><\/sup> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/g-scop.grenoble-inp.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">G-SCOP laboratory<\/a><sup data-fn=\"7ee498f7-56f5-4a5c-b2fa-5f4dc4065e1b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#7ee498f7-56f5-4a5c-b2fa-5f4dc4065e1b\" id=\"7ee498f7-56f5-4a5c-b2fa-5f4dc4065e1b-link\">3<\/a><\/sup>, which focus on eco-design and design for sustainability, by contributing to methodological developments centered on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of emerging technological systems with low Technology Readiness Levels (TRLs).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-cd8f080e1dc74b704ae0e59133c241c5\">New evaluation approaches under development<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For this purpose, UTOPII is conducting research aimed at developing new evaluation approaches, as current LCA-type methodologies are primarily applicable to existing objects or are limited, at the laboratory scale, to a single-criterion approach (e.g., greenhouse gas inventory). UTOPII adopts a systemic, multi-criteria, and multi-stage approach, incorporating other environmental categories such as resource criticality, pollution and toxic substance emissions, biodiversity, and human health. These scientific initiatives are correlated to ongoing international research, particularly in Europe, on prospective Life Cycle Assessment (pLCA). The long-term objective is to be capable of assessing engineering research projects, by considering the various environmental impacts associated with the future uses of technological innovations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-red-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-329b1065cc0db4e3c2ae8fd46acab779\">Broader focus on engineering and emerging technologies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These scientific developments will support a range of services and initiatives aimed at laboratories working in engineering sciences, particularly those affiliated with CNRS sections 10<sup data-fn=\"3b80b43e-7a93-406a-a9c6-98c3bc39f93d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#3b80b43e-7a93-406a-a9c6-98c3bc39f93d\" id=\"3b80b43e-7a93-406a-a9c6-98c3bc39f93d-link\">4<\/a><\/sup>, 11<sup data-fn=\"12507b75-660d-410a-9279-a5ed79cfcb0d\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#12507b75-660d-410a-9279-a5ed79cfcb0d\" id=\"12507b75-660d-410a-9279-a5ed79cfcb0d-link\">5<\/a><\/sup>, and 12<sup data-fn=\"e317e21b-bc65-4ebd-90a0-58e812260d8b\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#e317e21b-bc65-4ebd-90a0-58e812260d8b\" id=\"e317e21b-bc65-4ebd-90a0-58e812260d8b-link\">6<\/a><\/sup>. Ongoing initiatives include training programs, tools for project self-assessment, and the dissemination of methodological best practices. These are being co-developed with the participating laboratories, in collaboration with existing networks and research groups already engaged in environmental and eco-design issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The creation of the UTOPII research support unit directly addresses the urgent need to broaden research evaluation criteria, particularly research in engineering and emerging technologies.
